What the FORK?

Through the years, my kids have asked for some pretty unusual gifts. Don't misunderstand, they've asked for toys, big ticket items, certain clothes, what I would call asking for the normal stuff. But they've also made some interesting and unique requests, too.

The first unusual request I remember was when my daughter was about 3. She asked for a fork for Christmas. Yes, you read that right, a fork.
I said, “What would you like for Christmas?”
A fork.
A fork? Like a fork you eat with?”
Yes.
If Santa could bring you anything from anywhere, what would you ask him for?”
A fork.

My Mom had a collection of silver utensils she had gotten at various estate sales through the years. She found a fancy silver fork and wrapped it for my daughter. My daughter still has and uses that fork. It's her special fork, and she asks for it by name.

A couple of years ago, my son told me he wanted a giant fork.
Giant fork?”
(What is it with my kids and forks???)
Remembering the old wall décor from the 70's, I showed him pictures of the old wooden forks and spoons that people used to hang on the wall.
He said, “No, I'd like a giant fork that you can actually use!”
(What on EARTH?)
Um, wouldn't you need a giant mouth to use a giant fork?
Not with the right one.”
(My kids!)
I looked and looked for “a giant fork he could actually use”, but I never found one. Last year for Christmas, I don't know how he did it, but Santa found a giant fork for my son that he could actually use. When my son opened his stocking, there it was, and he flipped out!!

Last Christmas when we were putting the breakables away, my daughter was popping the bubble wrap. I reprimanded her because I needed the bubble part to cushion the ceramic and glass stuff. Of course she complained that she wanted to pop it because it was fun. She said, “Will you buy me some?” I said that I would get her some for her birthday.

Did she remember that I said that? Of course she did! Sometime over the summer, she mentioned it again. As it got closer to her birthday, she remembered and informed me, “Mom, you promised to get me bubble wrap for my birthday!”

For $6, I gave her the world and fulfilled my promise.

What are some of the wacky requests you've gotten?

  1. My kids would be in Heaven if I bought them bubble wrap. The long fork is cool, I think I'd turn it into my back scratcher.
