Embrace Your Geekness Day

I seriously considered not writing a post today because, well, while I'm not exactly cranky, I'm definitely not my usual chipper self. Then I found out that today is National Embrace Your Geekness Day. That made all the difference.

In case you don't know me well, I was being sarcastic. Sarcasm is really my fist language, English being secondary, a mere vehicle with which to spew sarcasm.

Anyway, I have an app on my phone that I don't look at every day, but it's called Checkiday. It tells you every national “day of something”. Some of them are humorous, some are silly, and some I need to Google.

Today's day though, aaaah, today is an official invitation to let my Geek flag fly.

Back in the day, a geek was akin to a nerd, and both were fairly derogatory, or at the very least meant to be insulting (so I've come to find out). I didn't realize I was being insulted, or maybe I didn't care. I went to a school that full of people like me, and most of the other students were/are infinitely smarter than I am. But we all seemed to know that we were meant to be together, and even now, ___ years after graduating, our class is still closer than graduating classes from most other schools. At least I think so.

I've had this same conversation (and variants of this conversation) several times through the years with former classmates, and the consensus seems to be that we were all a part of something pretty special. When you meet an alumnus, even though you may have attended the school years apart, there's an instant bond when you both figure out that you're alumni.

So, fellow geeks, Embrace Your Geekness today. If you're not a geek, that's okay, too. I suppose you could hug a geek instead.

Live long and prosper :)
